The Graduate Program in Biochemistry selected the thesis “IMPACT OF EMERGING WATER POLLUTANTS ON ENERGY METABOLISM, ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSES AND CALCIUM INFLUX IN THE RAT (Rattus norvegicus) AND FISH TESTICLE (Danio rerio) by Dra. the Program to represent the PPGBQA at the CAPES Thesis Award 2021.
The thesis was supervised by Profa. Dr. Fátima Regina Mena Barreto Silva and co-supervised by Dr. Allisson Jhonatan Gomes Castro and analyzed the effects of pollutants emerging from water on the reproductive functions in rats and fish.

Metabolic and morphological analyzes in the testicles showed that both the compounds present in the effluent from the paper and cellulose industry, as well as the larvicide pyriproxifene, have the potential to affect the normal progression of spermatogenesis. Thus, this study points out that pollutants commonly present in water bodies have the potential to deregulate important mechanisms for male fertility.

The main article of the thesis “Pyriproxyfen induces intracellular calcium overload and alters antioxidant defenses in Danio rerio testis that may influence ongoing spermatogenesis” was published in the journal Environmental Pollution (impact factor 6,5) in 2021.
